V. THE EXTENT OF DOUBLE CROPPING OF LAND
Since the introduction of chemical fertilizers it is now, by
and large, no longer necessary to let fields lie fallow and
to rotate crop production in order to naturally replenish the
nutrient stock in the soil. Modern chemical fertilizers allow
farmers to continuously farm the same piece of land and often
to plant this land with more than one crop per year as the
nutrient content can be fed into the soil artificially. The
data from the study show that double cropping in the region
was becoming a fairly common, although not a completely
Widespread, feature of farm activity in the Jordan Valley as
8% of the total arable land area was being harvested more
than once in the agricultural season (see Table 58).
Interestingly, sharecroppers and cash tenants were marginally
more likely than the other agrarian classes to double crop a
