sympathizers to the Arab cause than to the state of Israel.
Two possible explanations are pertinent here. First, one can
hypothesize that among Americans who come to work in
Arab countries and who hold an attitude towards the Pales-
tine problem, a higher proportion of those who are sympa-
thetic to the Arabs than those who are not came here. Second,
it could be that among the American intelligentsia who hold
an attitude towards the Palestine problem a majority is sym-
pathetic to Palestinian Arabs,
Other findings are: 24 per cent of our sample
said they lacked any knowledge about the problem, and 19
per cent said they were indifferent to the problem. Some
respondents attributed their indifference to lack of knowledge
about the problem. 9 per cent gave other replies, and 6 per
cent gave no answer. (See Table 5 below.)
